Karen has her Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineer from Stevens Institute of Technology and her Master's in Technology Management from the University of Pennsylvania and Wharton Business School. Karen worked for 12 years as a Mechanical Engineer and Machine Designer for Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products where her job had her travel all around the country and in Europe. Karen is also a licensed Private Pilot and flies her own Piper Cherokee. When she is not racing, Karen likes to cook and entertain. She makes some pretty great Sweet Potato Ravioli! Karen currently helps run the family's auto salvage business with husband, Tom.
Karen began her racing career in the Supercharged Top Alcohol Dragster owned by Tom Jones. Karen raced this car until she had her children, then she made to move to the Injected Nitro version of Top Alcohol Dragster when she and husband Tom purchased Morgan Lucas' A/Fuel Dragster. Karen and her team went on to win the Division 1 Top Alcohol Dragster Championship in 2011.
After several years of struggling, Karen chose to sit out 2019 and 2020, with her future in the Top Alcohol Class up in the air. Karen put her energy into the family business and in her children's racing programs. Daughter Emily and son Paul are both Junior Dragster drivers, and while Tom traveled to many NHRA events and Bracket Racing events, Karen traveled with her children and raced their junior dragsters.
A sudden change in plans occurred when Tom was approached in Dallas by Gene Gallant about getting Karen back into a car, and then rather quickly, Karen and Tom purchased the entire A/Fuel Dragster operation with Gene Gallant and Bob Smullen staying on to run the car. The team has had more success than originally thought for the first year together, and are looking to keep building to make a serious run for the National Championship in 2021.
